No Mud, No Lotus " - The art oftransforming suffering by - Thich Nhat Hanh
The author says - most people are afraid of suffering. But suffering is a kind of mud to help the lotus flow of happiness grow. There can be no lotus flower without the mud.
The author is from Vietnam and Budhist monk - Zen master. Giving herebelow some of the useful points from the book for implementation in ones life :
We can condition our bodies and minds to happiness with the five practices of - letting to, investing positive seed, mindfulness, concentration, insight.
Mindfulness is the best way to be with our suffering without being overwhelmed by it. Mindefulness is the capacity to dwell in the present moment to know what is happening in the here and now. to be mindful means to be aware. with mindfulness, you can recognise the presence of the suffering in you and in the world.
The most effective way o show compassion to another is to listen, rathar than talk.
We create unnecessary parth when our reaction to an unpleasant event is to compare ourself with other selves, reinforcing our illusion of separateness.
Our thinking, perceiving and worrying take away all the space inside us and keep us away from being in touch with what is happening moment to moment.
When we learn to acknowledge embrace and understand our suffering, we suffer much less.
